Sam Chapman grew up in Westcoutry, England. He studied historical plucked instruments with Elizabeth Kenny at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded the Julian Bream Prize and the Robert Spencer Award. In 2004 he came to Basel to study the Alexander Technique. After receiving the Leverhulme Scholarship, he studied lute with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 2012 he also completed an MA in basso continuo with Jesper Christensen.
Sam has participated in various CD productions and has performed at outstanding early music festivals. As a continuo player, he has performed with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, among others. His chamber music partners include the keyboard player Edoardo Torbianelli, the gambist Domen Marincic and the recorder player Laura Schmid.
He has been a lecturer for lute at the UdK Berlin since 2018 and has been teaching lute and basso continuo at the HfMDK Frankfurt since 2023.
