  • Gerhard Müller-Hornbach

    Composer

    Gerhard Müller-Hornbach – born in 1951 – is a composer, conductor, teacher and experienced music educator. From 1981 to 2016, he taught as a professor of composition and music theory at the University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) in Frankfurt am Main, where he co-founded the Institute for Contemporary Music (IzM) in 2005 and chaired its board of directors until 2016. He was head of the composition department at the HfMDK and was responsible for the master’s program International Ensemble Modern Academy from its establishment until 2016.

    He is the founder and artistic director of the MUTARE ENSEMBLE and musical director of the MUTARE MUSIKTHEATER ENSEMBLE, with which he has performed on many international stages. He was project manager of the “Response – New Music in Schools” project (Hesse and Thuringia) at the HfMDK until 2018. He is still involved in this project as a team member today.

    He is currently a lecturer at the Kronberg Academy and the Young Academy of the HfMDK. He has also worked on various educational projects, e.g. at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Center for Contemporary Music in Dresden, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, as part of VIELKLANG in Tübingen, at the Donaueschinger Musiktage and the response project of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Gerhard Müller-Hornbach is a member of the executive committee of the Landesmusikrat Hessen. His music and his artistic work as a conductor have been documented on numerous CDs as well as many radio recordings.

    Gerhard Müller-Hornbach has been awarded numerous prizes (including the Rome Prize of the Villa Massimo and the Vaillant Composition Prize of the Bergische Biennale). In 2009, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon by the Federal President.
